Design Patents
Design Patents have a shorter life of 14 years from the filing date as opposed to 20 years of utility patents Design patents are normally a lot less expensive to acquire. However, their effectiveness is proportionally watered down. Design patents only cover the ornamental features of a product. They do not protect the way it is made nor the methods and functions thereof.
